This week’s WWE Smackdown was an absolute pack. It featured various match-ups that resulted in the end and beginning of new rivalries. For the first time since unifying the universal and WWE Championships at Wrestlemania 38, Roman defended his championship on this week’s WWE Smackdown. Drew McIntyre and Sheamus had a face-off which resulted in Sheamus getting himself whooped hard by McIntyre. Also, with Money in the Bank nearing, Brock Lesnar returns and viciously destroys the Bloodline. Many more things went on Smackdown. So, here are the highlights and results of this week’s Smackdown.

WWE Smackdown matchcard

  • Madcap Moss vs. Happy Corbin (The Last Laugh)
  • New Day vs. Jinder Mahal and Shanky
  • Shayna Baszler vs. Raquel Rodriguez (Woman’s Money in the Bank Qualifying Match)
  • Matt Riddle vs. Roman Reigns (c) (Undisputed WWE Universal Championship)

Mr. McMahon made his way to the ring by leisurely strolling before delivering the most unsatisfying promo ever. It was a lot of hype for nothing, which was evident of the outcome at times. Next up was Riddle, who made a promo about Roman Reigns and their Undisputed WWE Universal Championship encounter later in the event. The Original Bro, put the main event across with an admittedly good video package for Randy Orton.

Madcap Moss vs. Happy Corbin (The Last Laugh)

For a week, the contest described as the first-ever Last Laugh match was nothing more than a singles battle between Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin. There were no particular requirements, and there was no enhanced intensity due to the fact that this was the conclusion of a feud. Instead, it was a straightforward bout in which Corbin dominated, only for Moss to storm back and finish the contest with two Punchline finishers in a row.

Winner: Madcap Moss

Madcap had the final laugh by laughing into the microphone after the contest. Corbin then went to the announce desk and informed Pat McAfee that he believed they were friends, but that he was being mocked by the latter. Before Pat stepped on the stage, Corbin vowed to take McAfee into the ring and destroy him. Before SmackDown went on, the audience backed with McAfee and booed Corbin out of the building.

The New Day vs. Jinder Mahal and Shanky

Following that, New Day faced Jinder Mahal and Shanky in a bout that had nothing to do with boosting the tag team division and everything to do with showcasing Shanky’s new dance aspect. Before Xavier Woods played his trombone, the action was unremarkable until Shanky decided to stop pounding on Kofi Kingston and start dancing. After that, Kingston slammed Mahal with Trouble in Paradise to win by pinfall.

Winner: The New Day

On SmackDown, Drew McIntyre and Sheamus were up next, and Adam Pierce informed both that they lost their Money in the Bank qualifying matches. The Irishman mentioned that he had previously cashed in his briefcase when Drew was being cashed in on. Pierce claimed he spoke with WWE executives about the matter, and they agreed to let Sheamus compete in the MITB contest. Drew assaulted the latter and threw him out of the ring before Pierce announced that McIntyre had also entered. Sheamus attempted to assault Drew in the ring, but Drew grabbed the Claymore instead.

Shayna Baszler vs. Raquel Rodriguez (Woman’s Money in the Bank Qualifying Match)

Raquel Rodriguez fought Shayna Baszler in a qualifying contest to earn a spot in Money in the Bank, as Lacey Evans watched from the commentary box. The victor of the competition would face Evans, Alexa Bliss, and Liv Morgan of Raw in the match. Rodriguez won the competitive bout after battling through The Queen of Spades’ challenge and putting her down with the Tejana Bomb for the victory.

Winner: Raquel Rodriguez

Matt Riddle vs. Roman Reigns (c) (Undisputed WWE Universal Championship)

For the first time in a month, Roman Reigns returns to SmackDown for the first time since regaining the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 38. Riddle, his opponent, came in with the upper hand. The Tribal Chief landed a huge uppercut on the overconfident challenger and then took control of the bout. Riddle scored a near-fall with a Floating Bro, but Reigns reclaimed charge of the match.

Matt Riddle fought his way back into the match, utilizing the trademark offense of Randy Orton to fuel his comeback. The resilient competitor kicked out of the Superman Punch then countered a spear into an RKO. When that did not put The Head of the Table away, he took to the air off a springboard. Reigns caught him in mid-flight with the spear to secure the win and successful title defense in a great match. Then, in an unadvertised surprise, Brock Lesnar returned to smash, crush and F-5 The Bloodline and prove that, clean loss or not, his issues with Reigns are far from settled.

Winner: Roman Reigns
