When Anil Kumble retired from Indian cricket, there was a massive void that needed to filled up. In those days, there was concern whether India had sufficient spin stocks available. There was one cricketer who was making a big impact in the IPL at that time. His First-Class experience was limited. But, he had made a name as a spinner in Tamil Nadu’s gully and local cricket. In the IPL for Chennai Super Kings, Ravichandran Ashwin was putting in magnificent performances.
It was only going to be a matter of time before he was fast-tracked into the Indian cricket team. After Chennai Super Kings won the IPL in 2010 and 2011, Ravichandran Ashwin was included in the Indian cricket team for the Tests against West Indies. On that gloomy day in 2011 till 2021, Ravichandran Ashwin has been India’s ultimate match-winner with the ball. With the bat, he has become a dependable batsman in all conditions.
Recently, he surpassed Harbhajan Singh and became India’s best offspinner in history. With over 400 wickets and his appetite for wickets increasing with every passing year, Ashwin is on course to break plenty of records.
Ravichandran Ashwin made his international debut in 2010 in ODIs and T20Is. His ODI debut was against Sri Lanka in Harare while his T20I debut came against Zimbabwe at the same debut. Ashwin made his Test debut against West Indies in 2011 in Delhi.
Ravichandran Ashwin made his debut in the IPL by playing for Chennai Super Kings. In his first two years, he enjoyed a stupendous return as the club enjoyed back-to-back IPL titles. After his stint with Chennai Super Kings, R Ashwin turned up for Rising Pune Supergiant when Chennai Super Kings were banned for a couple of years. He became captain of Punjab Kings after Rising Pune Supergiant was dissolved. He did not have that much success in his two years as captain and he moved to the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2020.
In 154 matches in the IPL, Ashwin has taken 138 wickets with his best being 4/34. His economy rate is 6.87 with an average of just over 23.
In his very first Test match, Ashwin took the format like a duck to water. He took 6/47 against the West Indies and secured the Man of the Match award in his debut match. Prior to his Test match heroics, Ashwin had picked up 11 wickets in the 5-0 whitewash of New Zealand. Throughout this entire period from 2013 till 2021, Ashwin dominated opponents at home. His 32 wickets in the 4-0 whitewash of Australia was a masterclass. In 2015, he took 31 wickets to help India beat South Africa 3-0.
Ashwin has formed a brilliant spin partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. The duo complements each other well. Jadeja keeps one end tight and builds pressure. This allows Ashwin to run through the opponents. Even with the bat, he is no slouch. He once scored a century and took 10 wickets in the 2021 Test match in Chennai against England. If Ashwin continues this form, he might very well go past 500 wickets in Tests.
In ODIs, he has endured a tough patch as he was dropped from the Indian cricket team following their defeat in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. But, he is part of the 2011 World Cup and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy sides under MS Dhoni.
In Tests, Ashwin is a phenomenal performer. His record against left-handed batsmen in particular is mind-boggling. In the list of his top 15 batsmen that he has dismissed the most, Ashwin has 14 left-handers. When a left-hander is on strike, R Ashwin is surely going to take his wicket. His average of 24.17 even after 82 Tests is amazing. Here is a look at his gest bowling performances.
