The Diamond League is an annual series of competitions which is organized by the World Athletics Federation. The 2023 Diamond League is the fourteenth season of the annual series of outdoor track and field meetings, organised by World Athletics. This competition is a revision of the top-level athletics series since the Diamond League foundation in 2010. The earlier number of Diamond Discipline events is 32. Currently, the dual-meet final format has been replaced by a single final. This has pulled down the number of events from 32 to 14.

In each meeting, there will be a host of events categorized under the Diamond Discipline. These events will be decided according to the allocation. However, some of these events will not be broadcast. Events losing Diamond Discipline status will feature on the World Athletics Continental Tour. It is the second tier of track and field meetings. The Oslo Diamond League is the fifth leg of the Diamond series starting from the 15th of June. There will be many competitors who will be gearing up for this competition. Let us take a close look at some of them.

Top athletes to watch out for in the Oslo Diamond League

Jakob Ingebrigtsen ( Event- Men’s 1500 m)

It has been rumoured for some time that Jakob Ingebrigtsen will attack Hicham El Guerrouj’s long-standing world 1500m record on home soil at the Bislett Games in Oslo on Thursday. After smashing Daniel Komen’s world best for two miles a few days ago, the Norwegian looks in supreme record-breaking form, too. The Olympic champion will run his first outdoor 1500m race of the season, where he will be looking to dominate a world-class field that includes Kenyans Abel Kipsang and Timothy Cheruiyot.

Karsten Walhom ( Event-Men’s 400 m)

While all eyes remain fixated on Jakob, there will be one more local hero at the centre stage of the event in Oslo. Fellow Norwegian and 400m hurdles world record holder Karsten Warholm will make his outdoor debut over the barriers looking to put an injury-riddled 2022 behind him. Warholm will be looking determined to win after conceding his world title to Alison Dos Santos. Karsten finished seventh, thereby breaking a winning streak of 22 races dating back to September 2018. He will line up against world bronze medallist Trevor Bassitt and fellow Americans CJ Allen and Khallifa Rosser.

Armand Duplantis ( Event- Men’s Pole Vault)

The Scandinavian circuit has always been known to bring out some of the best vaulting events in front of the world stage. Keeping with this tradition, vaulting legend Armand Duplantis will look to raise the bar in Oslo. The Swedish athlete will be facing the challenge of Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen, Christopher Nilsen. Olympic champions Renaud Lavillenie and Thiago Braz will also look to create hurdles for Duplantis.

Wayde van Niekerk ( Event- Men’s 400 m)

South African talent, Wayde Van Niekerk will take the field in the 400 m event and look to win the gold medal. He has already made a promising start to his 2023 season, posting his fastest time since 2017 at the national championships in April. However, he faces a strong field which includes four athletes who have dipped below 44 seconds. This includes London 2012 Olympic champion Kirani James, Anthony Zambrano and Zambian rising star Muzala Samukonga.

Femke Bol ( Event- Women’s 400 m hurdles)

Dutch sensation Femke Bol has made a promising start to her season in the 400m hurdles. The 23-year-old posted a world record time of 52.43s in Italy at the beginning of June. She will line up in Oslo for more improvement. Her main target will be to dethrone American world champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in Oslo.

Yulimar Rojas ( Event- Women’s Triple Jump)

In the women’s field, three-time world champion Yulimar Rojas will open her season in the triple jump. The 27-year-old Venezuelan athlete is the current Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo and was the silver medalist in Rio. At Oslo, she will like to continue this great run of form.

Chase Ealey ( Event- Women’s Shot Put)

Reigning world shot put champion Chase Ealey is in search of some consistency after a mixed bag of results so far this year. At Paris, Ealey was dethroned from the gold medal position by Portuguese Shot Putter Auriol Dongmo. In Oslo, she will look to claim back her spot at the podium.
