At the recent Hypo Meeting in Götzis, a World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting, the 22-year-old American heptathlete Anna Hall came tantalizingly close to breaking the 7000-point barrier in the heptathlon, thus securing a victory with a global best score of 6988. This achievement puts Hall in the elite company of the world’s all-time top five heptathletes, trailing only those in the 7000-point group: Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Carolina Kluft, Nafissatou Thiam, and Larisa Nikitina. Meanwhile, the decathlon title stayed with Canada, but was transferred from seven-time victor Damian Warner to his fellow countryman Pierce LePage, who claimed the top spot with a globally leading score of 8700.

In the shot put, two-time U20 world champion Saga Vanninen from Finland earned fourth place with a throw of 14.98m. Despite winning the 200m in a personal best time of 22.88, Hall showed signs of frustration during the long jump, falling short of the board on some jumps, even though she achieved the top three distances of the day. Hall remained in the lead going into the javelin, and she held onto that lead with a throw of 43.08m.

With just the 800m left to run, Anna Hall knew she needed to shave 0.87 seconds off her already impressive personal best time of 2:03.11 to reach the coveted 7000-point total. Hall, who claimed the US indoor 400m title earlier this year, gave it her all in the final event, setting another personal best with a time of 2:02.97, which brought her final score to 6988. This extraordinary feat puts Hall at second on the all-time list of achievements at Götzis, and her improved personal best of 233 points also makes her the second-best performer in North American history.

What Anna Hall had to say post her victory

“I’m very happy with the score. The crowd carried me through. It’s a dream. I am just 22 and I have time for a score over 7000 points. I am now focused on progressing. I will run the 400 meters hurdles in Florence next Friday and then I will return to the USA to get ready for the US National Championships and the World Championships, ” said an elated Anna Hall.
