Duplantis, a citizen of both Sweden and the United States, had the option of competing internationally for either nation. It was disclosed in June 2015 that he had chosen Sweden. In 2015, he made his international debut for Sweden at the World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia. On February 6, 2016, Duplantis cleared 5.49 m at a high school meet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, setting a new age-16 world best, world indoor youth best, and national high school indoor record, as well as becoming the first high school athlete to leap 18 feet indoors. Childhood & Family

Duplantis was born on November 10, 1999, to an athletic family in Lafayette, Louisiana, United States. Greg Duplantis, an American of Cajun and Finnish origin, is a former pole vaulter with a personal best of 5.80 m. His Swedish mother is a former heptathlete and volleyball player. His two older brothers, Andreas and Antoine and his younger sister, Johanna, were all athletes. Andreas competed as a pole vaulter for Sweden at the World Youth Championships in 2009 and the World Junior Championships 2012. Antoine switched from pole vault to baseball in high school before enrolling at Louisiana State University, where he was the team’s career hits leader in 2019.

Duplantis tried pole vaulting for the first time at the age of three and quickly picked up the sport. At the age of seven, he set his first age group world record, and at the age of ten, his leap of 3.86 m eclipsed the previous world records for ages 11 and 12. Duplantis learnt adequate Swedish as a second language while growing up in an English-speaking environment. He took extended Skype sessions to increase his fluency at his mother’s urging. At the same time, his mother asserted that although Duplantis was reluctant to speak Swedish in front of others, he enjoyed doing so in private. After winning the Olympic gold medal in 2021, his proficiency in the language had advanced to the point that he felt at ease speaking in full Swedish during the interviews.
