Femke Bol is the third-fastest woman in history with a current European record time of 52.03 seconds and the first Dutch athlete to win an Olympic medal in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2020 Tokyo Games (bronze) in the event. Bol took silver in the event at the World Championships in 2022. She became the first female athlete to win both the 400 m and 400 m hurdles at a major championships when she won both at the 2022 European Championships, where she also took home the gold medal in the women's 4 x 400 m relay. Bol is a two-time Diamond League champion as well as the 2022 World Indoor Championship silver medalist and the 2021 European Indoor champion.

Junior Career

In 2015, when she was 15 years old, Bol concentrated on the 400-meter sprint and began winning Dutch championships in her age divisions. She clinched five junior titles in 2018 and 2019, and five national youth championships in the 400 meters between 2015 and 2017.  At the 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival, Bol did not get past the 400 m heats. However, she advanced to the semi-finals of the event in the 2017 European Under-20 Championships two years later.

In her final year as a junior, she won two gold medals at the Dutch U20 championships (400 m indoors and 400 m hurdles) and earned her first national senior title in indoor 400 m. In June, Bol won a competition in Geneva with a timing of 55.94 seconds, shattering Dutch U20/U23 records and qualifying for the World Championships in only the third hurdles race of her life. With a gold medal at the European U20 Championships in July, she confirmed her status as the greatest under-20 runner on the continent in the 400 m hurdles. Shen then advanced to the semi-finals at the Doha World Championships with a new personal best time of 55.32 seconds in the heats.

Senior Career

Bol gradually increased her personal bests in 2021, achieving 11 national records and adding five more while competing on relay teams. She set a Diamond League record, three circuit meet records, and five World Athletics Indoor Tour and Continental Tour meet records. Bol competed in six 400m hurdles or flat races at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics between July and August 2021, including three relay legs in sub 50 seconds. She broke a European record in the fastest women’s 400m hurdles race in history, placing third in 52.03 seconds, breaking an individual Dutch record for the 11th time that year.  Sydney McLaughlin won the gold with a world record timing of 51.46 seconds in that event. She continued to rule the barriers in the Diamond League in 2021, taking first place in the Lausanne and Zürich finals with meet records of 53.05 and 52.80 seconds, respectively.

On May 31, 2022, at the Golden Spike meeting, she began her outdoor season by setting a world record in the 300-meter hurdles. Her time of 36.86 seconds beat the previous record set by Zuzana Hejnova in 2013 by 1.3 seconds. She lead the Dutch team to a silver medal and a national record at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, owing to her split of 48.95 seconds. In the 400m hurdles individual event, she finished second matching her season’s best (52.27) to McLaughlin who lowered her world record to 50.68 s.

She subsequently capped off the gold hat-trick at the 2022 European Championships in Munich, becoming the first female sprinter to win the 400-meter double at a significant competition. Her timing of 49.44 seconds for the open 400 m was the quickest at Europeans since Stuttgart 1986 and also a new national record, while Bol set a championship record over the barriers. She finished her Munich campaign with a 48.52 anchor leg to win gold and set a national record in the 4×400 m relay. Their time was also the quickest at the Europeans since 1986. Bol won three gold medals in the Championships, becoming just the second Dutch athlete to do so after Fanny Blankers-Koen in 1950.
