The Diamond League is an annual series of competitions which is organized by the World Athletics Federation. The 2023 Diamond League is the fourteenth season of the annual series of outdoor track and field meetings, organised by World Athletics. This competition is a revision of the top-level athletics series since the Diamond League foundation in 2010. The earlier number of Diamond Discipline events is 32. Currently, the dual-meet final format has been replaced by a single final. This has pulled down the number of events from 32 to 14.

In each meeting, there will be a host of events categorized under the Diamond Discipline. These events will be decided according to the allocation. However, some of these events will not be broadcast. Events losing Diamond Discipline status will feature on the World Athletics Continental Tour. It is the second tier of track and field meetings. This is the fourth leg of the series and will be starting from 9th June in Paris. There will be many competitors who will be gearing up for this competition. Let us take a close look at some of them.

Top athletes to watch out for in the Diamond League

Marcell Jacobs ( Event- Men’s 100 m)

Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs will finally make his outdoor season debut at the Paris Diamond League on June 9. Marcell comes to Paris with a lot of hopes due to the absence of Fred Kerley in the starting line. Jacobs is lined up to compete in the men’s 100m against some of the world’s best sprinters. The absence of Kerley has given hope to the athletics fans that he may finally run in his first 100m race of the season.

Ferdinand Omanyala ( Event- Men’s 100 m)

For Marcell, it won’t be a cakewalk in the park in his quest to win in Paris. He will be facing stiff competition from Ferdinand Omanyala from Kenya. Omanyala also has tried to win the Diamond League this season. However, he got back-to-back losses in Doha and Florence. Omanyala will be gunning for a comeback win against Jacobs, as he already defeated him once in the indoor season.

Noah Lyles ( Event- Men’s 100 m)

Noah Lyles is an American professional track and field sprinter competing in the 100 meters and 200 meters. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic 200 m bronze medalist and a two-time World champion. He won the event at the 2019 and 2022 World Athletics Championships. At these Championships Lyles also earned gold and silver medal in the 4 × 100 m relay respectively. He holds personal bests of 9.86 seconds for the 100 m and 19.31 seconds for the 200 m. The 200m record gave him the American record. It also made him the third fastest on the respective world all-time list. He will be one of the main competitors at the start line in Paris.

Miltiadis Tentoglou ( Event- Long Jump Men)

Miltiadis “Miltos” Tentoglou is a Greek long jumper. He won the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Tentoglou was the 2022 Diamond League long jump champion. He is the Greek indoor record holder and won 10 national long jump titles. He was the 2016 World Under-20 Championships silver medallist, and 2017 European U20 and 2019 European U23 champion. Tentoglou has the overall sixth-all-time record in the long jump. Having a very sensational performance last year, Tentoglou will look to win this year’s Diamond League as well.

Faith Kipgeyon (Event- Women’s 5000 m)

The women’s 5000m line-up at Paris is arguably better than any global championships start list. It is equivalent to the World Championship or an Olympic. In this prestigious tournament, Kipgeyon will be blaring to go at full throttle and win the 5000 m endurance-based run. Kipyegon has only contested two 5000m races to date, both back in 2015, and the last of which was also in Paris. The 29-year-old Kenyan now has superb speed for a distance of 1500 m in her legs. Added to that she also has superb natural endurance – as shown by her 62-second winning margin over 10km at the Sirikwa Cross Country meeting in Eldoret earlier this year. It will be a surprise if she doesn’t kill it in Paris.

Sydney McLauhglin-Levrone ( Event- Women’s 400 m)

World and Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will open her outdoor campaign with the 400 m competition. She will be one of the key athletes in the Paris Diamond League. The World Female Athlete of the Year last competed in a Diamond League race back in 2019. Since then, she has become a sporting superstar, winning Olympic gold and the 2022 world title in the 400m hurdles, both in world record times.

Chase Ealey (Event- Women’s Shot Put)

Numerous global champions from the US will dazzle the field events in Paris this year. One of them will be the world champion, Chase Ealey. The 22-year-old is currently ruling the world of shot put. As this will be the first opportunity for her to win a gold medal, Ealey will be going at it in full swing. However, she will be facing some toughness from Auriol Dongmo of Portugal. Other competitors will be Maggie Ewan, 2019 world silver medallist Danniel Thomas-Dodd, Commonwealth champion Sarah Mitton and China’s Song Jiayuan.
