Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the current Olympic champion in 1500 meters distance running from Norway. He specializes in middle- and long-distance running. His gold medal victory in the 1500 metres in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 established both new Olympic and European records. At the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Ingebrigtsen earned gold in the 5000 meter race in addition to silver in the 1500m competition. Four European championships have been won by him, including the 1500m/5000m double in 2018 and 2022. He became the second-youngest individual senior European track and field champion in history after winning the 1500 m in 2018 at the age of 17.

Junior Career

Ingebrigtsen won four medals as a junior in the 2017 European U20 Championships and the 2018 World U20 Championships. He was the youngest pacemaker in Eliud Kipchoge’s successful unofficial sub-2 hour marathon attempt in October 2019. In his junior career, he won two gold and one bronze medals at the World U20 Championships, while clinched two gold and two silver medals at the European U20 Championships.

Senior Career

Ingebrigtsen finished in 11th position in a Diamond League race at Hayward Field in Eugene, US, on May 27, 2017, becoming the youngest athlete in history to complete the one-mile distance in less than 4 minutes. On June 15, he ran nearly two seconds quicker, finishing first in a mile race at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway, in 3:56.29. On July 8, the same year, he set a junior European record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:26.81 at the Guldensporen competition in Kortrijk, Belgium. He had never before run in the 3000 m steeplechase race.

Ingebrigtsen came fourth in the Prefontaine Classic’s Bowerman Mile on May 26, 2018, with a timing of 3:52.28. It is the fastest mile time ever set by a 17-year-old. On July 5, 2019, he established a new personal best and a U20 European Record in the 1500 m, finishing second in 3:30.16 at the Lausanne Diamond League. On July 20, at the London Diamond League, he achieved a new national record and U20 European record in the 5000 m, finishing second in 13:02.03. Just behind Timothy Cheruiyot, Jakob was the second-best 1500 m runner in the world as of October 6, 2019. On his debut, he ran 27:54 to break Sondre Nordstad Moen’s Norwegian 10 km record at the Hytteplanmila in Hole, Norway, on October 19. Jakob’s speed was not only a national record, but it was also the fastest time by a European in 2019 and the European U20 10 km best.

Ingebrigtsen beat the previous record of 3:31:65 held by the Kenyan Abel Kipsang to win gold in the 1500-meter final at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, setting an Olympic and European record on the route. He finished the competition as the second-youngest winner. Ingebrigtsen passed Timothy Cheruiyot, who won the silver medal, for the first time on the final lap. Ingebrigtsen established his first senior world record on February 17, 2022, at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Liévin by finishing the indoor 1500 m in 3:30.60. By 0.44 seconds, he beat Samuel Tefera’s 3-year-old record.

Jacob was born on 19 September 2000 at Sandnes, Rogaland in Norway.
