The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has announced the eligibility criteria for the Asian Athletics Championships 2023, which will take place at the Pattaya Stadium in Thailand from July 12 to July 16, 2023. This announcement comes right before the commencement of the 26th National Federation Cup. The Federation Cup is scheduled for May 15 to May 18, 2023 and will be held at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Morabadi, Ranchi. As a result, the performances of Indian athletes at the Federation Cup 2023 will act as an important factor in the qualification of the Indian contingent for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships 2023.
Last month, the AFI preponed two primary domestic athletic events in India – the Senior Federation Cup and the Inter-State Championships by a month. The adjustment in schedule was necessitated due to the earlier-than-expected deadlines for the final submissions for the Asian Championships and Asian Games. The organizers of the Asian Athletics Championships set a deadline of June 12 for national federations to finalize their entries. On the other hand, the final entries for the rescheduled Asian Games are required by July 15, according to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The athletes’ performances in both the Federation Cup and the Inter-State Championships will be crucial in determining qualifications for the Asian Games.
The Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships 2023 will feature top athletes like Manu DP (men’s javelin throw), Annu Rani (women’s javelin throw), Mohammed Ajmal, Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, and Arokiya Rajiv (men’s 400m), Jabir MP (men’s 400m hurdles), Mohammed Anees Yahiya (men’s long jump), Ancy Sojan (women’s long jump), and Jyothi Yarraji (women’s 100m hurdles). Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, star runner Hima Das, jumpers Eldhose Paul, Praveen Chithravel, Murali Sreeshankar, and Jeswin Aldrin are a few big names who will skip the tournament.
