India’s young blood has shown sensational performance in the opening two days of the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2024, bagging 13 medals. These include 5 gold on the opening two days itself.

Deepanshu Sharma led the charge, winning India’s first gold of the championships with a massive 70.29m throw in the men’s javelin. His compatriot Rohan Yadav took silver with 70.03m as the two hogged the top two spots. There was more joy for India in the men’s discus throw where Ritik Rathee claimed silver with a 53.01m effort. Priyanshu also won India a silver medal, clocking 3:50.85 minutes in the 1500m finals.

The 60-member Indian contingent will look to build on this bright start over the next two days of competition. On day two, India added nine medals with Aarti securing a hard-fought bronze in the women’s 10,000m race walk, clocking 47:45.33 seconds. She also surpassed the World U20 qualification time of 49 minutes.

In the shot put, Anurag Singh Kaler clinched gold with a throw of 19.23 meters, while Siddharth Choudhary earned a bronze with a distance of 19.02 meters. Vinod Singh claimed silver in the men’s 5000m race, completing it in 14:09.44 seconds. Pavana Nagaraj soared to gold in the women’s long jump, covering a distance of 6.32 meters.

India had finished a creditable third in the 2023 Asian U20 Athletics Championships with 19 medals (6 gold, 7 silver, 6 bronze). This year’s event doubles up as the qualifying competition for the World U20 Championships to be held in Lima, Peru from August 27-31.
