The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has devised a tough training regimen for competitors in preparation for three major international competitions: the Asian Athletics Championships, the World Athletics Championships, and the Asian Games. The AFI’s goal is for its competitors to peak for the Asian Games and World Championships, with the Asian Athletics meet serving as a qualifying event for the bigger tournaments. To do this, the AFI has been accommodating to athletes in relation to national camps, even decentralizing them so that athletes are free to train wherever they choose as long as the federation and NADA are notified. Neeraj Chopra, Murali Sreeshankar, Annu Rani, and Jeswin Aldrin are a few great athletes that have chosen to train with their own trainers while still being constantly monitored by the head coach.

The AFI has also mandated that athletes engage in two crucial competitions, the Federation Cup and Inter-State championships, in order to assess their development and pinpoint areas for improvement. While relay teams may compete in the Thailand national championships to qualify for the world meet, sprinters and jumpers are not being sent to other nations for preparation. The head coach has voiced concerns about the mental toughness of Indian athletes and their capacity to compete at their best in important events. While some athletes exhibit grit and determination in huge competitions, many suffer once they get out of their comfort zones. The AFI is concentrating on improving athlete performance in big competitions.

Big International Tournaments ahead

The Asian Athletics Championships, the World Athletics Championships, and the Asian Games are all important competitions in the athletics calendar, and Indian competitors are predicted to do well at each of these competitions. To guarantee that athletes are suitably prepared and deliver their best efforts, the AFI has been working towards a thorough training schedule. The calendar of activities for athletes is already jam-packed with major international competitions and a variety of national competitions. However, according to the AFI, Indian athletes can participate at the top levels and be successful with the right training and preparation.

Here is what the chief coach P. Radhakrishnan Nair had to say about the athletes-

On being asked why the athletes aren’t able to capitalize on the big stage, the coach said to Sportstar, “I wish our athletes were mentally strong. They struggle the moment they come out of their comfort zones. Only a few show grit and determination while competing in big events. The AFI is working on this. We will see results soon.”
