The fifth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League began its action yesterday. The Nations League is a yearly competition for international volleyball players. The tournament will take place from May 30 to July 16, 2023. The decisive round will be held in Arlington, Texas, in the United States, at College Park Centre. Four volleyball confederations’ top 16 nations will compete in the VNL). It is one of the leading international indoor competitions put on by the FIVB, the organisation that governs the sport. There were some minor changes post which the final roster for the tournament was made. The changes resulted from the 2022 Nations League and the 2022 Challenger Cup. Australia was replaced by debutants Cuba in this edition.

Friday will see Japan take on South Korea in round 2 of the Volleyball Nations League. Japan is ranked seventh on the points table. While on the other hand, the Koreans languish at the bottom of the table. Japan and South Korea met in last year’s FIVB Nations League. In the last encounter, the Japanese team routed the Korean. Japan won that match easily in sets of 3-0. This time when South Korea will take the field against Japan, they will look to avenge their defeat and move from their current standing. On the other hand, Japan will look to take inspiration from their men’s team and climb the ladder.

What is the format of the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League?

Three weekly stages make up the preliminary round of the VNL 2023 women’s competition. Each week, the teams in the two pools are switched around to include all 16 teams. The top eight teams in the standings after three weeks will move on to the championship round. Each team competes in 12 games during the pool round. The last knockout round of the competition will after that feature eight teams. After the preliminary round, the teams’ rankings will be used to decide the order of the knockout stages. The preliminary stages will be conducted in the following places: Antalya, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Brasilia, Suwon and Bangkok. Preliminary rounds will continue up to the 2nd of July post which the knockout matches will begin.
