The updated format of the FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League 2023 involves sixteen women's teams, which will be split into two pools of eight teams each during the initial phase.
The FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League 2023 marks the tournament’s fifth year, running from May 30 to July 16, 2023. The event will be hosted in six different venues besides the final round. This prestigious international women’s volleyball event concludes with the final round, set to be staged at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas, USA. The roster of competing teams experienced alterations following the 2022 Nations League and the 2022 Challenger Cup outcomes, leading to the inclusion of the fresh entrants, Croatia, replacing Belgium.
A total of sixteen teams are competing, out of which eleven (Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, and United States) are core teams that are safeguarded from relegation. The other five- Dominican Republic, Croatia, Canada, Bulgaria, Poland) known as challenger teams, might be subjected to relegation from the competition based on their performances. Croatia clinched Belgium’s place in the competition, courtesy of their victory in the 2022 Challenger Cup.

During this stage, each team will participate in twelve matches. Following the pool phase, eight teams will advance to the final knockout stage of the tournament. The Nations League finals will feature the seven top-performing teams and the host country, who will proceed directly to the knockout stage. This stage will consist of eight matches, namely four quarterfinals, two semi-finals, and the matches for the bronze and gold medals.
In the final eight direct elimination, the top-ranked team will face off against the eighth-ranked team in a quarterfinal match, and the same pattern will follow for the rest of the teams (second against seventh, third against sixth, fourth against fifth. If the host team ranks among the top eight after the preliminary phase of the Nations League, they will be placed in the first position.
