Coventry reached the final of the promotion playoffs last season, but lost out to Luton Town in the showdown, while Forest Green got relegated to the English fourth tier after finishing at the foot of the 2022-23 League One standings.
Coventry City will begin their preparations for the 2023-24 season with a pre-season friendly away to Forest Green Rovers at the New Lawn on Tuesday. The hosts, meanwhile, have already begun their preparations for the upcoming League Two campaign, playing out a 1-1 draw against Melksham Town on July 6. Coventry had an impressive campaign last term, reaching the final of the promotion playoffs, but lost out to Luton Town in the showdown. Forest Green, on the other hand, finished at the foot of the 2022-23 League One table, and thereby got relegated to the fourth tier of English football.

Coventry City were impressive in the final phase of the 2022-23 season, losing just one of their final 17 second-tier games, but couldn’t cross the final promotion hurdle. Mark Robins’s men qualified for the playoffs courtesy of finishing fifth in the Championship standings, before defeating Middlesbrough 1-0 on aggregate in the promotion semi-final playoff. In the final, the Sky Blues came from behind to level the score through Gustavo Hamer’s 66th-minute effort, before losing 5-6 in tiebreaker. Now, they start over again in the Championship this upcoming season. Tuesday’s game is the first of four friendlies Coventry will play before opening their 2023-24 second tier season against recently-relegated Leicester City on August 6.
Forest Green, on the other hand, returned to the League Two after spending just one season in the third tier, courtesy of finishing at the bottom of the 2022-23 League One standings. Rovers collected just 27 points from 46 games, 17 points adrift of safety. Therefore, caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson was sacked and academy manger Hannah Dingley has been brought to the helm. Meanwhile, Green Army’s start to pre-season hasn’t been ideal either, playing out a 1-1 draw against eighth tier outfit Melksham last week. After hosting Coventry, the Green Devils will play two more friendlies against Plymouth Argyle and West Bromwich Albion, before beginning their League Two season at home to Salford City.
