Bristol City finished 14th in the Championship standings last term, collecting 59 points from 46 games, ten points adrift of the playoff places and 15 points clear of the relegation zone. This time around, Nigel Pearson’s side will be looking to secure a top half finish and they have started their preparations for the 2023-24 campaign on a positive note, thrashing Torquay United this weekend. The club have been active in the transfer market, signing the likes of Ross McCrorie, Rob Dickie, Haydon Roberts and Jason Knight. Meanwhile, after the game against Swindon, the English second division club will play Newport County, Oxford United, Exeter City, Cheltenham and Portsmouth later this month, before beginning their 2023-24 Championship season at home to Preston North End on August 5.
Swindon, on the other hand, have already played three friendlies this month, recording back-to-back wins against Swindon Supermarine and Melksham Town, before losing out to Corsham Town last time out. Michael Flynn, who was appointed as the manager in May, helped his side secure a 11th place finish in the English fourth tier last season, having taken 61 points from 46 games, 14 points short of the top seven. The Robins will need to improve considerably if they are to return to the third tier next season. After the game against Bristol, Flynn’s side have two more friendlies lined up against Eastleigh and Plymouth Argyle, before kicking off their 2023-24 League Two campaign away to Colchester on August 5.
