After back-to-back defeats to Millwall and Plymouth Argyle earlier this month, Leicester returned to winning ways with a victory versus West Brom on Saturday. The Foxes opened the scoring through Wilfred Ndidi’s 22nd-minute effort, before Jamie Vardy doubled the lead five minutes into the hour-mark. Although the Hornets pulled one back through Jed Wallace’s 76th-minute strike, Enzo Maresca’s side held on to the slender lead and secured all three points in front of their own supporters. It was their 29th Championship-win of the season. Moreover, Maresca’s men have been brilliant the King Power Stadium this term, recording 16 wins and collecting 49 points from 21 second-tier home-games so far.
Southampton, on the other hand, have already sealed a playoff spot as they are 18 points clear of seventh-placed Hull City, with three games remaining. But the Saints would be aiming to finish in the top two and earn automatic promotion to the Premier League. After three straight wins against the likes of Coventry City, Watford and Preston North End earlier this month, Russell Martin’s men lost out to Cardiff on Saturday. Martin’s side looked set to extend their unbeaten run five matches in the Championship, taking the lead through Joe Arbo’s 12th-minute opener, but the Bluebirds fought back to take all three points thanks to Famara Diedhiou’s 68th-minute equaliser and Cian Ashford’s winner six minutes into the injury time. The Saints are now sitting six points adrift of second-placed Leeds, but with a game in hand.
