Borussia Dortmund are only one game away from winning the Bundesliga crown. Unexpected results at the end of last weekend turned the tide massively in favour of Dortmund. Defending champions Bayern Munich were shocked 3-1 at home by RB Leipzig, while their nearest rivals Borussia Dortmund won away to Augsburg 3-0. These sudden turn of events meant Dortmund leapfrogged Bayern to the top spot in the Bundesliga table.

As things stand, Borussia Dortmund have 70 points from 33 games to be placed first in the Bundesliga standings, while Bayern Munich have 68 points from the same number of matches to be sitting second. Only one more round of matches are left to be played in their domestic league. On the final matchday both sides play mid-table opponents. Dortmund host ninth-placed Mainz, while Bayern travel to tenth-placed Koln. Let us look at how Borussia Dortmund can win the Bundesliga crown on the last matchday.

Defeat for Bayern Munich: Borussia Dortmund win Bundesliga

Bayern Munich cannot afford to drop points on Saturday. They are on 68 points compared to Borussia Dortmund’s 70. A defeat for the defending German champions in this fixture would mean that Dortmund can lift the Bundesliga crown irrespective of what happens in their match. Hence, the Dortmund supporters will be eager to see the defending champions lose points on Saturday. A trip to tenth-placed Koln will neither be easy, hence Bayern have to be at the top of their game to avoid another shock result.

Draw for Bayern Munich: Borussia Dortmund win Bundesliga

Even a draw will not be good enough for Bayern Munich. That point will only take their total tally up to 69 points, which will still be one short of Borussia’s Dortmund’s current points tally of 70. Hence, Bayern cannot afford to neither lose or draw the final game cause their rivals will then win the trophy irrespective of how their match turns out to be. Therefore, Bayern need all three points to have a chance of retaining the Bundesliga crown.

Win for Bayern Munich: Borussia Dortmund will also need the victory

If Bayern Munich manage to get three points away to Koln, then they will put the pressure right back on the current leaders. In such a scenario, Bayern’s total tally will rise to 71 points. Since the defending champions also have a far superior goal difference of 53, a draw will not be enough for Borussia Dortmund (39 goal difference) to get their hands on the trophy. As a result, if Bayern Munich win their last match, Borussia Dortmund must also win their game against Mainz to clinch the coveted Bundesliga title.
