Olympiacos scrapped through to the last eight stage of the Conference League despite suffering a 4-1 defeat to Maccabi Tel Aviv in the first leg in Greece on March 7. In the away leg a week later at TCS Arena, the Greek outfit thrashed the Yellows 6-1 thanks to Ayoub El Kaabi’s brace and one goal each from Daniel Podence, Kostas Fortounis, Stevan Jovetic and Youssef El-Arabi. After that Jose luis Mendilibar’s side suffered a narrow 1-0 league-defeat away to AEK Athens but quickly bounced back with back-to-back wins over Aris Limassol and Lamia, with an overall score of 8-1. The Legend are now occupying fourth spot in the Championship standings having collected 63 points from 30 games, four adrift of leaders PAOK.
Fenerbahce, on the other hand, thrashed Union SG 3-0 in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Belgium thanks to one effort each from Michy Batshuayi, Jayden Oosterwalde and Dusan Tadic. The Yellow Canaries lost the second leg 1-0 in Turkey and thereby went through to the quarter-finals with a 3-1 aggregate victory. Ismail Kartal’s side then recorded back-to-back league-wins over Trabzonspor (3-2) and Adana Demirspor (4-2). Fenerbahce are currently occupying second spot in the Turkish top flight standings, having collected 82 points from 31 games, just two adrift of leaders Galatasaray.
