Following the mid-week games, all the conversation has rightly been about Erling Haaland surpassing the all-time goalscoring record in the division. His second half strike against West Ham United was enough to make Haaland the top goal scorer ever in a single Premier League season. With that strike, he surpassed the records set by former English strikers Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. Both have held the goalscoring record in a single campaign for a long period of time but now the Norwegian centre-forward has leapfrogged them in the list.

It is an incredible achievement to register for any footballer. To score that many goals in a single season is not something one does very often. However, credit to Haaland for settling into life in England pretty quickly. It goes without saying that one cannot compare different eras of the sport. What Cole and Shearer achieved back then was as sensational as Haaland’s achievement right now. Besides, the Norwegian centre-forward is lucky enough to be a part of an all-dominating Manchester City squad under Pep Guardiola. Anyway, let us look at the top three players who have scored the maximum number of goals in a single Premier League season.

Erling Haaland (35 goals; 2022-23 season) Manchester City

It is incredible to think that Erling Haaland is only 22 years of age. The Norwegian centre-forward has already started to break numerous records in his debut campaign in the Premier League. Sometimes it is easy to forget that this is only the first season for Haaland in England because he has settled in to the fast-paced physical game in the EPL without much fuss. There are still five more games left for him to play this campaign in the Premier League. Hence, it is unclear how many more goals he could end up with this season. One thing is guaranteed – Manchester City have got an unstoppable goalscoring machine in their ranks who does not look like slowing down anytime soon.

Andy Cole (34 goals; 1993-94 season) Newcastle United

Andy Cole is often remembered for his achievements with Manchester United. However, he created this single season landmark with Newcastle United instead. The 1993-94 season was a memorable one for the former Englishman who found the back of the net an astonishing 34 times. Cole is a traditional number nine, who is very good in the box. His movements without the ball can make life extremely difficult for defenders to mark him. He makes clever runs behind them, and finishes those chances without much fuss. However, it is important to note that Cole scored those goals in a 42-game Premier League season.

Alan Shearer (34 goals; 1994-95 season) Blackburn Rovers

Alan Shearer is arguably one of the best strikers to ever grace the Premier League. What he has achieved in the league is simply incredible. Shearer has scored an astonishing 260 goals throughout his career in EPL – a record that still remains untouched. However, most of Shearer’s success has been with Newcastle United. Either way, this landmark which he managed for Blackburn Rovers in the 1994-95 season still stands as one of the greatest of Shearer’s career. However, just like Andy Cole, Shearer’s goalscoring exploits in that season came in a 42-game campaign.
