Dustin Patrick Runnels (born April 11, 1969, Austin, Texas, United States) is an American professional wrestler and trainer best known for his time in the WWE under the in-ring name Goldust. He is currently signed with All Elite Wrestling where he performs under the ring name Dustin Rhodes. The son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes and the half-brother of fellow wrestler Cody Rhodes, he is also known for his appearances with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA).

Between WWE and WCW, Goldust has won 23 total championships. In WCW, he was a two-time United States Heavyweight Champion, a one-time Six-Man Tag Team Champion and a two-time World Tag Team Champion. In WWE, he is a three-time Intercontinental Champion, nine-time Hardcore Champion, one-time World Tag Team Champion and two-time WWE Tag Team Champion. Goldust has also appeared in the second most Royal Rumble matches, at 13. He headlined multiple pay-per-view events for the WWF and WCW during the 1990s. He is also a former Sammy Guevara’s Vlog champion.

Goldust in WWE

Goldust debuted as a fan favourite in WWE in late 1990, wrestling as Dustin Rhodes. His first match in the WWF was against Paul Diamond on WWF on MSG Network on September 21, 1990. In December 1990, Rhodes defeated Ted DiBiase in a televised ten-minute challenge match. On January 19, 1991, at the Royal Rumble, Rhodes and his father Dusty lost to Ted DiBiase and Virgil in a tag team bout, and both left immediately after. He returned to the company in August 1995 as Goldust, a character who angered his opponents with his flirtatious comments and sexually charged affection toward them. He wore a golden jumpsuit, painted his face gold and black, and wore a platinum blonde wig on his head during his promos.

Various feuds

Goldust defeated Bam Bam Bigelow in the latter’s last match at Survivor Series. He also won the Intercontinental Championship after defeating Razor Ramon in 1996 but later lost the title to Ahmed Johnson at King of the Ring. From 1997 to 1999, he feuded with Val Venis, Jeff Jarrett, Al Snow, The Blue Meanie and The Hardy Boyz as Dustin Runnels before leaving the company in May 1999. He returned as Goldust on January 20, 2002, at the Royal Rumble and attacked Rob Van Dam on Raw, turning heel, but was defeated by Rob at the event No Way Out. He later won the Hardcore Championship on nine occasions. After WWF was renamed WWE, Goldust teamed up with Booker T on Raw. The duo won the World Tag Team Championship at Armageddon but later broke up.

Tag team success

He returned to WWE for the fifth time at the Royal Rumble on January 27, 2013, and was eliminated by his half-brother, Cody Rhodes. He won his first WWE title in 11 years after defeating The Shield with Cody Rhodes. They defended the title many times, before losing it to The Miz and Damien Mizdow at the Survivor Series. His half-brother, Cody, debuted as a new character, “Stardust,” with his appearance resembling that of Goldust. In 2016, he formed an on-and-off tag team with R-Truth, and together, they were named The Golden Truth. They won their first match at the Money in the Bank pre-show, defeating Breezango. Their team later had a feud which ended after Goldust defeated R-Truth on the July 10 episode of RAW.

Goldust wife

Goldust married Ta-rel Marie Roche, on June 22, 2012. This is his third marriage. He was previously married to Terri Runnels who was a wrestling valet, manager and television host. They have a daughter, Dakota Avery, who was born in 1994. The couple divorced after six years of marriage on October 18, 1999. He also has a stepson. He briefly married Milena Martelloni from 2002 to 2003.

Since the character’s introduction in 1995, Dustin Runnels has enjoyed a level of success that most workers in the business can only dream of. Bizarre, provocative and completely controversial, Goldust took the wrestling world by storm, once again proving that a good gimmick can make a world of difference.
