Cody Rhodes in WWE

Rhodes made his WWE debut on July 2, 2007, in a backstage segment involving his father Dusty Rhodes and Randy Orton. He was then involved in a storyline against Randy Orton and lost his debut match to him.

He then started feuding with Hardcore Holly and lost to him in three successive matches. Rhodes then earned the respect of Holly and the two men formed a tag team and started taking on other teams. They fought against the Tag Team Champions Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch at Survivor Series, in what was Rhodes’ first on-screen title shot but were unsuccessful. On the Raw 15th Anniversary special episode in 2007, Rhodes, along with Holly, defeated Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch to win the World Tag Team Championship.

Joining Legacy, becoming the IC Champion

In 2008, Rhodes and Ted Dibiase aligned with Randy Orton and formed a stable known as Legacy. As part of Legacy, Rhodes entered the Royal Rumble match in 2009 in order to help Orton win, and lasted until the final three, before being eliminated by Triple H.

Cody then got involved in an angle between Orton and the McMahon family where they helped Orton to attack Vince, Shane, and Triple H. His involvement in high-level feuds such as this elevated him to main-event status. Rhodes won the Intercontinental Championship in 2011 when he defeated Ezekiel Jackson.

In 2012, Rhodes aligned himself with Damien Sandow, attacking Tag Team Champions Team Hell No (Daniel Bryan and Kane). They were known as “Rhodes Scholars”.

In 2013, he teamed up with his brother Dustin (Goldust) and feuded with the Authority (Triple H & Stephanie McMahon) and the SHIELD. The Rhodes brothers defeated Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins with the help of Big Show to capture the tag team titles.

New beginning as Stardust

In 2014, Cody debuted a new character named Stardust which was similar to his brother’s Goldust character. It was not a very successful gimmick and received mixed reactions from the fans. On May 21, 2016, Rhodes revealed on Twitter that he had requested his release from WWE citing frustrations with WWE’s creative department and his position within the company as the reasons for requesting his release, noting that he had “pleaded” with writers to end the Stardust gimmick for over 6 months and pitched numerous storyline ideas which had been ignored.

Successful Indie career

He then had a successful career on the independent circuit and Ring Of Honor before helping form All Elite Wrestling in 2019 with Tony Khan, Kenny Omega, and the Young Bucks. He departed AEW in 2022 and re-signed with the WWE. He made his return at WrestleMania 38 as Seth Rollins’ mystery opponent and went on to have a five-star match.

Fighting with a torn pectoral

Several outlets stated on March 18, 2022, that Rhodes had signed a contract with WWE. On the first night of WrestleMania 38, Rhodes was unveiled as Seth “Freakin” Rollins’ surprise opponent, beating Rollins after a six-year absence. On the next night of Raw, Rhodes said that he was returning to WWE to capture the WWE Title, something his father, Dusty Rhodes, never got to hold. Rhodes then defeated Rollins again in a rematch at WrestleMania Backlash.

Before their Hell in a Cell encounter at the same event, Rhodes sustained a genuine pectoral muscle rupture, which occurred midway through a brawl on the previous Raw edition. The injury was worse when the muscle completely detached from the bone when Rhodes was weight training in the days leading up to the tournament. He entered Hell in a Cell with a big discolored area on his skin, yet despite the serious damage, he defeated Rollins for the third time. Dave Meltzer gave the match five stars, making it the first WWE main roster battle to do so since 2011.

Four days later, it was revealed that Rhodes had successfully had surgery to repair a ruptured right pectoral tendon, but that he would be unable to compete for the next nine months.

Royal Rumble 2023 winner

After many segments recorded his recovery from injury, Rhodes declared on the January 16 edition of Raw that he will compete in the men’s Royal Rumble match on January 28 at Royal Rumble. Cody Rhodes entered the Royal Rumble at number 30. He eliminated Gunther to win the event. Rhodes challenged Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania 39 on the January 30 edition of Raw. Later that night, WWE announced the match.

Both the men are set to face at the grandest stage of all as WWE’s biggest annual event returns to Hollywood for WrestleMania 39. A marquee match between undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns and Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes will headline the events from SoFi Stadium over two days in Inglewood, California on Saturday, April 1, and Sunday, April 2.
