Valencia have recorded five wins, four draws and seven defeats from 16 La Liga games so far. Los Che have not tasted a league a win since edging past Granada CF 1-0 on November 4. Ruben Baraja’s lost three of their last four top flight games, against the likes of Real Madrid (5-1), Girona (2-1) and Getafe, but they did manage to progress in the Copa del Rey on December 5 courtesy of a 2-1 success over lower division side Arousa on December 5. Meanwhile, Los Che have done decently well in front of their own supporters, taking 13 points from a possible 21 at Mestalla.
Barcelona, on the other hand, are going through bit of a rough patch, having lost their last two outings, against the likes of Girona and Antwerp in the league and Champions League respectively. After edging past Atletico Madrid courtesy of Joao Felix’s lone goal at Estadio Olimpic Lluis Companys on December 3, a week later Xavi’s side welcomed surprise title-challengers Girona for a much anticipated top of the table clash. The reigning champions suffered a surprise loss 4-2 to Gironistes in Catalonia despite the fact that Robert Lewandowski and Ilkay Gundogan got on the scoresheet. The result helped the visitors to leapfrog Real Madrid into the summit of the standings, while Blaugrana slipped to the fourth spot.
