San Jose Earthquakes will host Los Angeles Galaxy in a Major League Soccer fixture at Stanford Stadium on Saturday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat to St. Louis City, while La Galaxy played out a goalless draw away to Colorado Rapids. As of now, Earthquakes are occupying seventh spot in the Western Conference standings having collected 27 points from 20 games, and a victory on Saturday will help them climb to the top four. The visitors, meanwhile, have two games in hand and are languishing at the 14th position, with just 15 points to their name, just two clear of rock bottom side Colorado.

Earthquakes, who had finished 14th in the standings last season, can claim to be enjoying an excellent campaign, having recorded seven wins, as many defeats and six draws from 20 MLS-games thus far. The Quakes’ last success came against Philadelphia Union (2-1) on June 10 thanks to goals from Jeremy Ebobisse and Miguel Trauco. Since then, the Goonies have not tasted victory in their last three outings, losing two matches in the period. Last weekend, Luchi Gonzalez’s side lost out to Western Conference leaders St Louis despite the fact that Jamiro Monteiro got on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, bulk of their points have come on familiar territory, picking up six wins and three draws from ten league-games at Stanford Stadium this term.
LA Galaxy, on the other hand, have the fourth-worst away-record in the top flight this season, having pocketed just seven points from a possible 30. Last time out, Galaxy shared the spoils against rock bottom side Colorado despite being the better team at DSG Park. The result extended their winless run to four games, drawing three successive matches in the period. Their last success came against Real Salt Lake (3-2) on May 31 thanks to goals from Gaston Brugman, Memo Rodriguez and Tyler Boyd. It was only their third league-win of the campaign. Meanwhile, Greg Vanney’s side can still get back into contention for the playoffs with two games in hand on some of the teams above them in the table. For that to be realistic, Galaxy need to start producing positive results on a consistent basis.
