The little island nation of Saint Kitts came through the qualifying playoff rounds to earn a spot in Group A of the Gold Cup, but didn’t have the best of debuts, conceding three goals and registering only a single shot on goal against Trinidad. Soca Warriors opened the scoring through Alvin Jones on the stroke of half-time, before Ajani Fortune doubled the lead in the 65th-minute and Jameel Ible netted an own goal 17 minutes from time. The defeat at the weekend was the worst that this team had experienced in over two years when they were handed 4-0 loss versus El Salvador.
USA, on the other hand, came into the tournament on the back of Nations League triumph courtesy of defeating Canada 2-0 in the final. However, the Yanks conceded inside the opening 13 minutes against Jamaica in the 2023 Gold Cup-opener on June 24 and had to wait till the 88th-minute to level the score thanks to Brandon Vazquez’s effort. Although the reigning champions have not selected their strongest squad for this tournament, they are still favourites lift their eight Gold Cup title. USA’s last defeat in this competition came against Mexico way back in 2015 and since then the Yanks have won 39 straight matches when netting multiple times in the continental championship.
