Jamaica, who came into the continental competition on the back of a ten-game winless run across all competitions, produced a solid performance against the recently crowned Nations League champions to earn a point. Hallgrimson’s men took an early lead through Damion Lowe’s 13th-minute effort and could have extended the lead but Leon Bailey missed a spot kick just before the half-hour mark. The penalty-miss came back to haunt the Reggae Boyz as USA leveled the score through Brandon Vazquez two minutes from time. Nevertheless, it was confidence-boosting result for Hallgrimson’s men, who are now set to take on Trinidad & Tobago for the first time at the Gold Cup. The last five meeting between these two sides have seen both nations winning two games each, while the latest encounter in March this year ended in a goalless draw.
Trinidad & Tobago put on quite a show in their opening fixture, scoring three goals without reply against Saint Kitts and Nevis at DRV PNK stadium on Sunday. It was the first time the Soca Warriors had scored three goals in a Gold Cup fixture since 2015 and their largest-ever victory at this tournament. Alvin Jones opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, before Ajani Fortune doubled the lead five minutes into the hour-mark and Jameel Ible’s 73rd-minute own goal sealed all three points for Eve’s men. The result extended Trinidad’s unbeaten run to seven games across all competitions, scoring 11 goals and conceding just one in the process.
