Goalkeepers are one of the most under-appreciated players on a football pitch. The shot-stoppers do not get sufficient praise for keeping the opposition from scoring, but they are blasted from every corner once they make even the smallest error. It is often the goal scorers who take most of the credit for a team winning the match. They are closely followed by goal creators – the ones who creates the opportunities in the final third. These are the players who often take the credit for a team’s success.

Despite the lack of appreciation for their work, goalkeepers are always expected to maintain an unbelievable level of consistency week in and week out. It is because a single mistake by a keeper could quickly result in a goal being conceded for their team. Other players on the pitch, especially attackers, can get away by making mistakes but goalkeepers cannot afford to do that. They are always expected to maintain a high standard and some manage to do that on a consistent basis. Let us look at the three goalkeepers who top the clean sheets chart in the 2022-23 Premier League season.

David De Gea (15 clean sheets) Manchester United

The Manchester United goalkeeper has been a pillar of consistency for the club right at last line of their defence. He has single-handedly kept the team from conceding on multiple occasions over the past decade at Old Trafford. It has been a familiar story once again in this campaign for the Spaniard. United have gone through some highs and lows this season, however, De Gea has remained constant. He has held it on his own at times to help the Red Devils gain valuable points. Despite Man United struggling defensively at times, David De Gea has done impressively well to keep 15 clean sheets.

Nick Pope (13 clean sheets) Newcastle United

He has been one of the key reasons behind Newcastle United maintaining such an impressive defensive record this season. Nick Pope has impressed many people with his shot saving ability this campaign. He has looked extremely calm and composed in between the posts and rarely lets the ball get past him. He has also been lucky to have a well-drilled defensive unit in front of him, who minimise Pope’s involvement in the game. Having said that whenever Pope has been called into action, he has lived up to the expectations quite well.

Alisson (12 clean sheets) Liverpool

It is incredible to see the Liverpool goalkeeper sitting third in this list. The Reds have been going through a poor run of form this season and are struggling big time to even qualify for the Champions League. However, Alisson has managed to consistently play at the top of his game week in and week out. He has helped Liverpool get out of several tricky situations over the course of the season. Alisson is good with his distribution from the back and is also a reliable shot stopper. He has kept 12 clean sheets till now in the Premier League this season.
