Bayern got the better of Arsenal 3-2 in the two-legged quarter-final tie, while Los Blancos edged past holder Manchester City on penalties in the last round.
Bayern Munich will play host to Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final tie at Allianz Arena on Tuesday night. Both sides got the better of Premier League outfits in the quarter-finals, with the hosts prevailing 3-2 over Arsenal in the two legged tie, while Los Blancos defeated holders Manchester City 4-3 on penalties in the second-leg after the scores were tied at 4-4.
After playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Emirates Stadium on April 9, Bayern secured a narrow 1-0 win over Arsenal in the second leg in Germany a week later thanks to Joshua Kimmich’s second-half effort. It was a much needed victory for the Bavarians after conceding the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen. Thomas Tuchel’s side are now left with only the Champions League as they were dumped out of DFB-Pokal at the hands of minnows Saarbucken, who will take on Leverkusen in the final next month. Meanwhile the Bavarians are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 league-win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend. Harry Kane netted a brace to help Bayern extend their winning run to four games in all competitions.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday thanks to Arda Guler’s lone goal on the half-four mark. It was their 26th league-win of the season and the result extended their unbeaten run to 18 games in all competitions. Los Blancos are now comfortably sitting at the summit of the La Liga standings having collected 84 points from 33 games, 11 clear of the chasing pack. Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti’s side had to dig deep to get the better of Manchester City in the last round of the Champions League, thanks to Andriy Lunin who held his nerve from 12 yards after Rudiger’s 12th-minute opener was canceled out by Man city attacker Kevin de Bruyne’s effort 14 minutes from time.
