The season is nearing its end, and the Premier League top four race is coming down to the wire. With very little to separate the three sides competing for Champions League places, supporters can expect to see a closely-fought battle in the coming days. As things stand, Newcastle United are third in the Premier League table with 66 points from 35 games, while Manchester United are fourth with the same number of points and matches. Liverpool are a point and a place behind, while they have also played a game more than these two sides.

The maximum Liverpool can get is 71 points, hence if Man United and Newcastle win two of their remaining three games then top four will be sealed. What seemed like a cakewalk at one point in the season has all of a sudden turned out to be a tight battle. A lot of credit must be given to Liverpool for conjuring up an impressive winning run. Having said that Newcastle’s destiny is very much still in their own hands. If they win two of their three remaining games then it does not matter what Liverpool does. Let us take a closer look at the final three fixtures of Newcastle United.

Brighton – May 18 (Home)

This will be an extremely difficult tie for Newcastle United. It is not the time for any side to play Brighton, as they are firing on all cylinders and are one of the in-form sides in the division. Fresh from registering a stunning victory over Arsenal in their last game, the confidence will be high on Brighton’s camp. Brighton also have an outside chance of finishing in the top four if they win all their matches and other teams drop significant points. Even though the possibility seems slim, Brighton do not look like they are going to slow down anytime soon. Despite playing the match at home, Newcastle will have to be at the top of their game to get the maximum points from this fixture.

Leicester City – May 22 (Home)

This could end up being a straightforward contest for Newcastle United. If Leicester City’s recent form is taken into account, then Newcastle will be the overwhelming favourites in this tie. The only concern would be that Leicester are inching ever closer to relegation, hence, every point counts for them. With not many games left, they would be desperate to make every game matter. As a result, the Foxes could come to St James’ Park all guns blazing to get the maximum points. If that is the case then Newcastle will be in for a tough night against the relegation battlers.

Chelsea – May 28 (Away)

In a normal season, no club would want to end their term away at Stamford Bridge. However, there is nothing normal about this campaign. Chelsea are not even in the top half of the table, as they are struggling massively in the Premier League. Considering Newcastle United’s form this season, they would fancy their chance of getting the three points at Stamford Bridge. Having said that it is not the ideal fixture any team would want in their final match. Even though Chelsea do not have much to play for this season, they have the players capable of hurting any side on a given day, particularly in their own backyard. If Newcastle have not sealed their top four status by the time this fixture arrives, then they could be in for a nervy ending to the season.
