Morocco will host Cape Verde in an international friendly at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Monday. Both sides were previously in action in March with the hosts playing out a 0-0 friendly-draw against Peru, while Cape Verde secured a narrow 1-0 win over Eswatini in the AFrica Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Atlas Lions have already secured qualification for the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast and are set to take on South Africa and Liberia in their remaining qualification-matches later this month. The visitors, meanwhile, will resume their quest for a place in the continental tournament with a Group B fixture against Burkino Faso on on June 18.

Morocco had a stunning 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar, reaching the semi-finals, courtesy of defeating Spain in the last eight stage. However, the Atlas Lions were denied a place in the final following a 2-0 defeat to France, before losing 2-1 to Croatia in the third-place playoff matchup. The North African outfit continued their stunning form, defeating Brazil 2-1 in a friendly at Grand Stade de Tanger on March 25 thanks to goals from Sofiane Boufal and Abdelhamid Sabiri. Three days later, Walid Regragui’s men were held to a goalless draw by Peru. Meanwhile, Morocco became the first team to qualify for 2023 AFCON courtesy of victories over South Africa and Liberia in their opening two qualifying games back in June 2022.
Cape Verde, on the other hand, are sitting at the second spot in Group B of the AFCON qualifiers and are on the cusp of securing a fourth appearance in the continental competition. Blue Sharks have collected seven points from four group-matches, just three points adrift of leaders Burkina Faso. After losing 2-0 to Burkina Faso in their opening group-match back in June, a run of two wins and a draw in their subsequent three matches has put them in a good position to make successive AFCON appearances. On March 28, the Tubaroes Azuis secured all three points against Eswatini thanks to Ryan Mendes’s lone goal in the second half. The result extended their unbeaten run to four games across all competitions, recording three wins and two clean sheets in the period.
