Fiorentina general manager Joe Barone passed away ahead of their final fixture before the international break against Atalanta BC, and thereby the game was postponed. Viola’s last Serie A game ended in a 2-2 draw with AS Roma on March 10. Four days later, Vicenzo Italiano’s men played out a 1-1 draw at home to Maccabi Haiafa and thereby advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League with a 5-4 aggregate victory. The result extended their unbeaten run to six games across all competitions, recording two wins in the process. Although Italiano’s men have won only one of their last five outings in the league, they have done well in the domestic cup tournament, reaching the semifinals of the Coppa Italia for a second season running, where they meet Atalanta next week.
Milan, on the other hand, went into the international break with a comprehensive 3-1 Serie A win away to Hellas Verona on March 16. One goal each from Theo Hernandez, Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze helped Rossoneri secure their 19th league-win of the campaign at Marcantonio Bentegodi. It was their fifth successive win in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and conceding just four in the process. Moreover, Stefano Pioli’s side have also booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League courtesy of defeating Slavia Prague 7-3 in the two-legged round of 16 tie earlier this month.
