Scandals around footballers have surfaced for a long-time now. There have been a lot of cases in the past with England’s Mason Greenwood being the latest to be summoned. The Manchester United forward was on Wednesday released on bail. He had earlier been arrested after a woman alleging incidents of violence posted pictures and videos on social media. The posts have since been deleted. He was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill on Tuesday. The Greater Manchester Police had also released a statement around the issue.

Greater Manchester Police said Greenwood was arrested after the force “became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence”.

Sportswear firm Nike suspended its relationship with the footballer.”We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation,” a spokesman said.

Let us have a look at a few other footballers who were allegedly involved in similar scandals:

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese talisman was named in #MeToo movement which broke out in 2019 by an American woman Kathryn Mayorga who accused the five-time Ballon d’Or holder for raping her in a penthouse at Las Vegas hotel in 2009. He had later paid Mayorga a reported $375,000.00 for keeping away from publically spreading the information.

“Mr. Ronaldo paid the sum of $375,000.00 and both parties agreed to be bound by explicit confidentiality and non-disparagement obligations,” his attorney, Peter Christiansen, noted in a court document.

Ronaldo, however, had denied her claims and maintained that sex was consensual. The criminal charges were later dropped surrounding the case but a civil case looking to overturn a $375,000 settlement is still going on.

“I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in. Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense,” Ronaldo tweeted.

Benjamin Mendy

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has received fresh new charge for attempted rape on Thursday. He faced a new attempted rape charge at his pre-trial hearing involving a new complainant and is now accused of nine offences in all relating to six women, according to reports.

It includes seven counts of rape relating to four women, one of sexual assault and the latest charge, is of attempted rape.

Mr Justice Thompson set a pre-trial date of March 11. He also urged the judges for no delay with an estimated time of six months for the trial.

“It’s not fair on the complainants and not fair on the defendants,” Thompson said. “I’m conscious of the fact that the complainants have already suffered significant delay. Say, for example, Mr Mendy, his career is on hold. Everyone has got to understand Mr Mendy can’t go to work. This matter needs to be tried,” he added.

Neymar Jr.

The Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain star was accused of forced sex in 2019.

However, Neymar Jr. denied the claims and said it was ‘unjust accusations’ as nothing really happened. The case was later dropped due to a lack of evidence.
