Mason Greenwood news: Manchester United forward released on bail after arrest

Greater Manchester Police informed on Wednesday that the 20-year-old was released from custody on bail pending further inquiries.

Promising young Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, 20, on Wednesday has been released on bail pending further investigation, as per reports. On Sunday, the young English striker was arrested after a woman alleging incidents of violence posted pictures and videos on social media. The posts have since been deleted. Police were reportedly granted extra time on Monday to question Greenwood and he was further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill. However, Greater Manchester Police informed on Wednesday that the 20-year-old was released from custody on bail pending further inquiries. A statement said: “A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation”.

Meanwhile, Manchester United football club had earlier issued a statement saying that they had suspended the player until further notice. “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice,” the statement read. In an earlier statement, the Premier League club had said that they would launch their own investigation into the matter. “We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

Mason Greenwood removed from FIFA 22

Besides, Mason Greenwood has been removed from the widely-popular game FIFA 22 by EA Sports. Following the latest database update, which was released on all platforms including PlayStation, Xbox and PC on Tuesday ( February 01), Greenwood no longer features in the popular football simulating gaming title in offline modes and has been removed from the United squad. However, he is still available to use on the FIFA Ultimate Team game mode and can still be traded on the game mode’s transfer market, according to reports.

A spokesperson from the game’s manufacturer Electronic Arts said: “Mason Greenwood has been removed from active squads in FIFA 22 and has also been suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) packs and Ultimate Draft.”

Meanwhile, sportswear giant Nike, which provides the forward’s boots, has suspended their sponsorship with the young English forward. The brand said in a statement: “We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood. We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation”.

Having made his United debut in 2019, Greenwood has played for the club 129 times and has scored 35 goals after progressing up through the youth ranks. The young forward had signed a new deal in February 2021, which will keep him at Old Trafford until at least 2025.
