Marseille will host Sporting Lison in a UEFA Champions League fixture at Stade Velodrome on Tuesday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a dominant 3-0 win over Angers in a Ligue 1 fixture on Saturday. Sporting Lisbon, meanwhile, defeated Gil Vicente 3-1 in a Portuguese Primeira Liga match a day earlier. With two wins from as many games, the Portuguese outfit are currently occupying top spot in Group D of the Champions League, while Marseille, who are yet to open their account, are languishing at the bottom of the four-team table.

Marseille began their 2022-23 European campaign with back-to-back defeats against Tottenham Hotspur (2-0) and Eintracht Frankfurt (1-0) in September. However, the French outfit have been impressive in their domestic circuit, having recorded seven wins and two draws from their opening nine Ligue 1 games, to be sitting at the second position in the standings. Last time out, the Olympians put three goals past Angers without reply at Stade Raymond Kopa. Jonathan Clauss, Luis Suarez and Gerson netted for the Marseille to take all three points.
Sporting Lisbon, on the other hand, haven’t made a great start to their Primeira Liga season, having won just four of their opening eight games to be sitting at the eight spot in the standings. However, the Lions have been brilliant in the European stage thus far, having beaten Eintracht Frankfurt (3-0) and Tottenham Hotspur (2-0) in September. Against Spurs, Paulinho broke the deadlock with a dramatic 90th-minute strike before Arthur doubled the lead three minutes into the injury time to seal the win for the Green and Whites.

Marseille full-back Sead Kolasinac is sidelined with an injury. Former Arsenal-man Alexis Sanchez, who has netted four Ligue 1 goals thus far, is expected to lead the line with Suarez and Dimitri Payet in support. Matteo Guendouzi is likely to pull the strings in the midfield alongside Rongier. As for Sporting Lisbon, Marcus Edwards has been in stunning form having registered three goals and two assists domestically. The Englishman is expected to join Paulinho and Goncalves up front. Meanwhile, the likes of Jovane Cabral, Luis Neto and Daniel Braganca are sidelined with injuries.
