Bayern Munich will host Viktoria Plzen in a UEFA Champions League fixture at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a dominant 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in a Bundesliga fixture on Saturday. Viktoria Plzen, meanwhile, played out a 1-1 draw against Bohemians in a Czech First League match on the same day. Bayern put four goals past Leverkusen without reply courtesy of strikes from Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala, Sadio Mane and Thomas Muller. The result helped the Bavarians to move to third spot in the German top flight standings, having collected 15 points from eight games, just two points behind leaders Union Berlin. Meanwhile, Bayern’s opening two Champions League group stage fixtures against Inter Milan and Barcelona ended in 2-0 victories. Against Barcelona, on September 13, Julian Nagelsmann’s side broke the deadlock through Lucas Hernandez, five minutes into the second half, before Sane doubled the lead, four minutes later to seal the win.
Viktoria Plzen, on the other hand, lost their first two Champions League group stage games against Barcelona (5-1) and Inter Milan (2-0). In their opening match against the La Liga outfit, Franck Kessie opened the scoring , before Robert Lewandowski netted a hat-trick and Ferran Torres completed the drubbing with their fifth goal of the night. Meanwhile, the Czech outfit scored a consolation goal through Jan Sykora. And then, against Inter, goals from Edin Dzeko and Denzel Dumfries handed a second consecutive Champions League defeat to Michal Bilek’s side.
Bayern boss Nagelsmann will be forced to make some changes following a couple of positive COVID cases. German internationals Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich have been tested positive for coronavirus and are likely to miss Tuesday’s contest. Therefore Matthys Tel is expected to lead the line with Mane, Musiala and Sane in support. Marcel Sabitzer could partner Goretzka in the engine room. As for Viktoria Plzen, midfielder Bucha is unavailable for the game against the German outfit because of a red card suspension. Therefore, either Ales Cermak or Jan Kopic could partner Kalvak and Sykora in the middle of the park.
