The two teams meet for the first time since the end of August when an 88th-minute strike from Rodri sealed a 2-1 victory for the Reigning English, European and world champions at Bramall Lane.
Manchester City have a chance to climb to the second spot in the Premier League standings, when they play host to Sheffield United at Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The hosts are currently occupying fourth spot in the table, having collected 37 points from 18 league games, three adrift of second-placed Arsenal, while Pep Guardiola’s men also have a game in hand over the top three- Liverpool, the Gunners and Aston Villa. The Blades, meanwhile, are languishing at the bottom of the 20-team table, with just nine points to their name, seven away from safety. After a disappointing 2-2 Premier League draw against Crystal Palace on December 16, Manchester City travelled to Saudi Arabia for the FIFA Club World Cup, thrashing the likes of Urawa Reds (3-0) and Fluminense (4-0) in the semi-final and final respectively to clinch their maiden world title. Guardiola’s men returned to winning ways in the English top flight when they came from behind to get the getter of Everton on Wednesday night thanks to one goal each from Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva. Cityzens are now unbeaten in their last six outings, recording four wins in the period. Meanwhile, the Sky Blues enter Saturday’s contest having drawn each of their last three league-games at the Etihad Stadium. Nevertheless, Man City have never lost any of their previous 11 encounters with the Blades.
Sheffield United, on the other hand, have recorded two wins, three draws and 14 defeats from their 19 league games so far this season. The Blades’ latest success came against Brenftord on December 9 thanks to James McAtee’s lone goal on the stroke of half-time. Since then, Chris Wilder’s side have taken just a solitary point from a possible nine, losing to Chelsea and Luton either side of an impressive 1-1 draw to third-placed Aston Villa. Sheffield United lost out to the Hatters on Boxing Day despite taking a 2-1 lead through second-half efforts from Oli McBurnie and Anel Ahmedhodzic. Two own goals from Jack Robinson and Anis Ben Slimane turned the game on its head in the final 13 minutes. Meanwhile, the Blades have conceded the most goals (47) in the division so far this season.
