Mallorca will host Villarreal in a La Liga fixture at Iberostar Stadium on Friday night. Both sides didn’t have the best of starts to their 2023-24 Spanish top flight campaign last weekend, with the hosts playing out a 1-1 draw away to Las Palmas, while the Yellow Submarine were beaten 2-1 by Real Betis. Meanwhile, the Pirates had an impressive league-campaign last term, finishing ninth in the standings, and will be hoping to claim yet another top half finish or may be even challenge for a European qualification this time around. The visitors, on the other hand, claimed fifth place in the top division last season, thereby qualifying for the group stage of the 2023-24 Europa League.

Mallorca came from behind to earn a point against the newly promoted La Palmas at Gran Canaria last Saturday. The Pirates fell behind through Jonathan Viera’s penalty kick on the half-hour mark, before Antonio Railo leveled the score 20 minutes from time. Head coach Javier Aguirre wouldn’t be very pleased with his side’s performance in their opening match of the campaign, but their summer activity suggests a strong campaign is more than possible. Sergi Darder, Cyle Larin, Samu Costa, Siebe Van der Heyden, Manu Morlanes, Omar Mascarell and Toni Lato have all arrived at the club during an impressive transfer window.
Villarreal, on the other, suffered a last-minute heartbreak against Betis last time out. The Yellow Submarine fought back from a goal down to make the score 1-1 thanks to Jorge Cuenca’s 61st-minute effort, but just when it looked like the points would be shared, Willian Jose scored a 95th-minute winner for the Green and Whites and broke the hearts of the home fans. Meanwhile, Yellow submarine have been able to bring in a number of players this summer, including Alexander Sorlothm Ramon Terrats and Denis Suarez, but the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Pau Torres and Samuel Chukwueze has departed in big-money deals.
Mallorca probable starting lineup: Rajkovic, Maffeo, Valjent, Copete, Costa, D Rodriguez, Morlanes, Darder, Ndiaye, Muriqi, Larin
Villarreal probable starting lineup: Jorgensen, Foyth, Mandi, Cuenca, Pedraza, Capoue, Parejo, Terrats, G Moreno, Sorloth, Baena
