Mainz will continue their preparations for the 2023-24 Bundesliga season with a pre-season friendly against St. Gullen at 28 Black Arena-Nonntal in Austria on Tuesday. The 05ers are heading into the match on the back of a convincing 6-1 victory over TuS koblenz in their pre-season opener on July 14, while Espen have already started their 2023-24 Swiss Super League season and suffered a narrow 1-0 league-defeat away to Lugano at the weekend. The German outfit had an impressive 2022-23 Bundesliga season last time out having finished at the ninth position in the standings and will be bidding to secure a European spot this time around.

Mainz ended their previous Bundesliga campaign with four defeats and a draw from their final five games. However, despite going through a poor run of form, the 05ers claimed a ninth place finish courtesy of collecting 46 points from 34 games, just four points adrift of top seven. The Carnival Club returned for pre-season mid-way through this month, defeating TuS Koblenz thanks to Ludovic Ajorque’s brace and one goal each from Aymen Barkok, David Mamutovic, Brajan Gruda and Delano Burgzorg. After Tuesday’s game, Svensson Bo’s side will begin their competitive season away to SV Elversberg in the DFB-Pokal first round clash on August 12.

St. Gallen, on the other hand, have already played two league-games this season, starting wit a 2-1 victory over Basel on July 22 thanks to Willem Geubbels’ 38-th-minute opener and an 86th-minute winner from Lukas Gortler. Three days later, Espen lost 3-1 to Valencia in a friendly before suffering a Swiss Super League defat away to Lugano courtesy of Zan Cellar’s lone goal 20 minutes from time. After Tuesday’s friendly against the German outfit, St. Gallen will resume their domestic duties with a home-fixture against Luzern on August 6.

Probable Lineups

Mainz have made four signings thus summer, bringing in the likes of Batz Daniel and Krauss tom from Saarbrucken and RB Leipzig respective on permanent deals, while Mata Ken has joined the club on free transfer and Van de Berg Sepp has arrived on loan from Liverpool. St. Gallen on the other hand, are unlikely to start their best eleven for Tuesday’s game having been in a competitive action only two days ago. Therefore, head coach Zeidler Peter might use this opportunity to test his bench strength.
