Magdeburg will host Sevilla in a pre-season friendly at MDCC-Arena on Sunday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-0 win over Nordsjaelland last week, while the La Liga outfit suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat against Hansa Rostock on Friday. FCM, who had earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga courtesy of winning the 2021-22 German third tier title, extended their stay in the second division for at least one more season following an impressive 11th place finish last term. Rojiblancos Sevillistas, meanwhile, had disappointing 2022-23 La Liga season, finishing 12th in the standings, but they won the Europa League title courtesy of defeating AS Roma in the showdown in Budapest last month.

Magdeburg, who were back in the 2. Bundesliga for the first time since the 2018-19 season, punched above their weight to finish 11th in the standings, collecting 43 points from 34 games. This time around, the Blues will be bidding to challenge for a place in the top three and thereby have a shot at promotion. Magdeburg have started their pre-season on a positive note, recording five successive wins against Zerbst (14-0), SV 1890 Westerhausen (4-0), Altglienicke (2-0), Zakakiou (8-1) and Nordsjaelland (2-0). Christian Titz’s side got the better of Nordsjaeland on June 14 thanks to two unanswered goals from Baris Atik and Alexander Nollenberger. After the game against Sevilla, Der Club have one more friendly against Wehen Wiesbaden before beginning their 2023-24 2. Bundesliga season against Eintracht Braunschweig on August 6.
Sevilla, on the other hand, started their pre-season with back-to-back wins over Cordoba (2-0) and Ceuta (5-2) before getting the better of Independiente del Valle 2-1 on penalties after both side were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Meanwhile, Los Nervionenses lost their first pre-season game against Hansa Rostock on Friday despite the fact that Rafa Mir found the back of the net at Ostseestadion. Jose Luis Mendilibar’s men will play four more friendlies against the likes of Magdeburg, Crystal Palace, Real Betis and Atletico Madrid before kicking off their 2023-24 La Liga campaign at home to Valencia on August 11. Moreover, Sevilla will take on Champions League winners Manchester City in the UEFA Super Cup final on August 16.
French centre-back, who joined Sevilla on loan from Rennes in January, has signed a permanent deal earlier this month and the 23-year-old would be expected to play a key role in Mendilibar’s plans. Meanwhile Sevillistas Rojiblancos have also brought in left-back Andria Pedrosa from Espanyol on a permanent deal. Mir will be expected to lead the attack with Jesus Corona in support.
