Viktoria Plzen were forced to dig deep against Servette in the round of 16 tie as the scores were locked at 0-0 at the end of 120 minutes of play in the second leg at Dosan Arena. Nevertheless, the Czech outfit prevailed 3-1 in the penalties thanks to Martin Jedlicka’s heroics in goal. The 26-year-old Gloveman made two crucial saves from the spot. Meanwhile, when it comes to the Czech First League, Miroslav Koubek’s side are currently occupying third spot in the standings, having collected 55 points from 27 games, 13 adrift of leaders Slavia Praha.
Fiorentina, on the other hand, got the better of Maccabi Haifa 5-4 on aggregate to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Conference League. Viola secured a thrilling 4-3 win in the first leg in Bozsik Arena thanks to Antonin Barak’s dramatic winner five minutes into the injury time. Meanwhile, the second leg in Italy ended in a 1-1 draw courtesy Antonin Barak’s effort on the hour-mark. Since Vincenzo Italiano’s side are unlikely to make European competition next season via the Serie A, as they are sitting at the 10th spot in the standings, seven points adrift of Atalanta, Viola may have to win either the Copa Italia or triumph in Conference League to play in Europe next term.
