Chelsea supporters will be eager to see their side put behind the disappointments of last season, as they prepare for a fresh new campaign. The Blues had a miserable 2022-23 season in every which way, as they fell well short of the expectations. Chelsea not only missed out on a European place but also finished outside the top half of the Premier League table – something not many saw it coming. They also suffered early cup exits.

The Blues are now starting a new era under Mauricio Pochettino and there are plenty of changes to the squad. Quite a lot of players have departed the squad and a few are being linked with joining them as well. Hence, it will be a beginning of an exciting new journey for Chelsea. The 30-man squad is currently training in the USA, as they prepare for pre-season games.

“We come here to build and, at the end of the day, we just want to try to win. Every team comes in a different place. My staff and I know we are in different zone to the other teams who have continuity, but we are preparing for the next year, focused on our objectives, and preparing a base for next season. We want Chelsea to get back to where it belongs – and where we want it to be,” Mauricio Pochettino, quoted by their club’s website, said ahead of their match against Brighton.

In the first pre-season game, Chelsea comfortably overcame Wrexham 5-0. However, it will not be the same against one of the most exciting Premier League sides of last season, Brighton. They outperformed expectations to finish sixth in the league standings, something not many saw coming. Despite the difficulty level attached with the meet, Pochettino is eagerly awaiting to face them.

“Last season they played so well. And they are signing players with experience for their squad. So I think it’s going to be a tough game. It is pre-season and we want to win and perform in our best way, but now is the moment to build the team and to see young players to play,” the Argentine coach said.

Chelsea supporters would have been pleased to see the arrival of full-back Reece James with the squad in Philadelphia. He was unable to join them at the beginning of the week due to illness. “We need to manage the players. Reece (James) arrived yesterday from the UK and it would be easy for me to say go and play, but there is a risk. Maybe nothing would happen and it would be ok. But if something happened, maybe we have to wait one or two months. So the objective is to provide the best tools for the individuals and set the principles,” he explained.
