After recording four consecutive wins with an aggregate scoreline of 8-1, Lazio have suffered back-to-back defeats against Torino and Inter. Last Saturday, the White and Sky Blues suffered their eighth league-defeat of the season despite taking the lead through Anderson’s 30th-minute effort. Despite the defeat, the Eagles are still holding on to the second spot in the Italian top flight standings, having collected 61 points from 32 games, 18 adrift of leaders Napoli and just one clear of third-placed Juventus. With six games remaining, Just four points separate the Eagles from Inter, AC Milan and Roma, therefore there is still work to do if Maurizio Sarri’s side are to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
Sassuolo, on the other hand, are looking to secure a top half finish this term. The Watermelon Peel are currently sitting at the 11th position in the Serie A table, with 43 points to their name from 32 games, 14 adrift of the top six. Neroverdi came from behind to secure all three points against Empoli last time out thanks to substitute Domenic Berardi’s brace in the last ten minutes, including a dramatic 97th-minute winner from the penalty spot. The Black and Greens have now won seven of their last ten outings in the top flight, while it was their 12th league-win of the season. After the game against Lazio, the Watermelon Peel will take on Bologna, Inter, Monza and Sampdoria before ending the season at home against Fiorentina.
Lazio will be looking to complete a Serie A double over Sassuolo for the first time in five years. Meanwhile, Wednesday’s fixture at Stadio Olimpico will be the 15th-meeting between these to sides. Lazio has a clear advantage when it comes to the head-to-head, having won 11 times, compared to just five wins for the Watermelon Peel, while three meeting ended in draws. Nevertheless, the last six competitive meetings have seen both sides winning three games each.
