Football supporters were in for a major shock when it was announced that talented young forward Kylian Mbappe would not be staying in Paris beyond 2024. The Frenchman was earlier linked heavily with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. However, Mbappe put bed to those rumours by extending his stay at Paris Saint-Germain. Despite not being more than a year since signing the extension, Mbappe has once again announced his desire to leave the French capital club.
The former World Cup winner had signed a contract in the summer of 2022 which would allow him to stay at Paris Saint-Germain for a guaranteed period of two years and an option for a third year. However, Kylian Mbappe does not seem to have any intention of triggering that option. In other words, his contract with PSG will end in 2024. Hence, the French giants find themselves in a difficult situation now of having to either sell Mbappe for some money this window or risk losing him for free next summer.
Mbappe sent a statement to news agency AFP to clarify over the contract situation and about his future. “After having publicly declared in recent weeks that he will be a Parisian next season, Kylian Mbappe did not ask for his departure this summer, but merely confirmed to the club that he was not activating his additional year,” Mbappe’s statement read.
“The management of the club in charge of its extension (signed on May 21 2022) was informed of its decision on July 15 2022 and the sole purpose of the email was to confirm what had already been orally clarified previously. Mbappe and his entourage claim they have not discussed this point with the club again during the year, except 15 days ago to announce the sending of the letter. Nor has any possible new extension been mentioned.”
He added: “Finally, Mbappe and his entourage regret that the receipt of this letter has been transmitted to the media and that these exchanges are made public with the sole aim of damaging his image and the smooth running of conversations with the club.”
The latest development will come as a major shock to Paris Saint-Germain board and its supporters. With Lionel Messi departing the club for Inter Miami and Neymar’s future remaining unclear, PSG’s new project was set to revolve around Mbappe. However, now the French champions might have to make a decision on whether to keep the striker for one more season and risk losing him for free or sell him this summer and make some money out of this transfer. The next few days and weeks will be interesting to see where Mbappe’s future will lie.
