The club friendly between Kawasaki Frontale and Bayern Munich will take place at Japan National Stadium on Saturday at 3:30 pm IST.
On Saturday, as part of their pre-season tour in Asia, Bayern Munich will face Kawasaki Frontale, who were the runners-up in last year’s J1 League, at Tokyo National Stadium. While Kawasaki is currently well into their 2023 season, Bayern Munich, the German champions, still have several weeks before they begin their new season.
In preparation for the 2023-24 season’s curtain-raiser on August 12, Bayern Munich traveled to Japan and Singapore. After a dominating 27-0 win over Rottach-Egern, they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Manchester City in Tokyo, the team that knocked them out in the previous Champions League. Bayern’s striker Mathys Tel scored in the 81st minute, but City secured a late victory. Next, they will face Kawasaki Frontale in Tokyo before clashing with Liverpool in Singapore. Bayern clinched their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title last season under Thomas Tuchel’s guidance. As they aim for Champions League success, the club is targeting the signings of Kyle Walker and Harry Kane while expecting to lose Sadio Mane to Saudi Arabia.
Bayern Munich has won Europe’s top club competition six times, while Kawasaki Frontale is yet to secure their first-ever Asian Champions League title, never progressing beyond the quarter-finals despite several attempts. In the past six seasons, Kawasaki has been crowned Japanese champions four times, finishing as champions in 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2021, and securing the second position, two points behind Yokohama F Marinos, last year. Recently, they secured a last-minute 1-0 victory against Marinos and drew 2-2 with Vissel Kobe. With just over a goal per game on average, Kawasaki Frontale’s main weakness this season is their scoring rate, currently placing them at a disappointing seventh position in the standings after 21 matches.
Kawasaki Frontale probable starting lineup: Jung, Yamane, Takai, Kurumaya, Noborizato, Wakizaka, Schmidt, Seko, Ienaga, Yamada, Miyashiro
Bayern Munich probable starting lineup: Sommer, Pavard, Kim, Upamecano, Davies, Kimmich, Gravenberch, Sane, Musiala, Coman, Gnabry
