Ivor Coast came from behind to secure a thrilling 2-1 win over Nigeria in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations on February 11, thanks to second-half efforts from Franck Kessie and Sebastian Haller. It was their third AFCON triumph and first one since 2015. On Saturday, Emerse Fae’s men were held to a draw by Benin in a friendly at Stade de la Licorne despite the fact that Max-Alain Gradel and Oumar Diakite found the back of the net. The Ivorian’s have one more friendly lined up this month before resuming their quest to qualify for a fourth FIFA World Cup. The Elephants will be hoping to build on their wins over Seychelles and Gambia when they take on Gabon and Kenya in the Group F fixtures in June.
Uruguay, on the other hand, have been brilliant in the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualification so far, recording four wins, one draw and a defeat from six outings. After a 2-2 draw with Colombia back in October last year, La Celeste bounced back with three successive wins, against the likes of Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. Marcelo Bielsa’s side are currently occupying second spot in the ten-team standings, with 13 points to their name, just two adrift of Argentina. On Saturday, the Sky Blue came from behind to earn a draw with Basque Country in a friendly thanks to Matias Vecino’s equaliser. Meanwhile, Uruguay will face Panama, Bolivia and the hosts United States in Group C at the 2024 Copa America in June.
