Vatreni are preparing for the Euro 2024, which will kickoff mid-way through June, while the North African outfit will be hoping to get ready for the AFCON 2026 World Cup qualifiers in early June.
Tunisia will take on Croatia in an international friendly at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday. The winner of the match will face either hosts Egypt or New Zealand in the final of the mini tournament organised by FIFA next week. The brand-new FIFA series will see five separate mini-tournaments played in locations all over the world between nations who would rarely get the opportunity to face each other. Tunisia are heading into the match on the back of a disastrous Africa Cup of Nations, where they were knockout out in the group stage, after collecting just two points from three outings. Jalel Kadri left the post as manager following the team’s poor performance in the continental competitions, and Montasser Louhichi is currently in caretaker charge. The North African outfit are one of the favourties to qualify for the next edition of the World Cup, as they are clubbed in a relatively weak group, consisting of the likes of Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Malawi, Liberia and Sao Tome & Principe. The Eagles of Carthage have already won their first two qualifiers without conceding against Sao Tome and Malawi. The group winners will secure automatic qualification to the finals in the expanded format in 2026.
Croatia, on the other hand, qualified for Euro 2024 courtesy of finishing second in Group D, having collected 16 points from eight games, just a solitary point adrift of Turkey and four clear of third-placed Wales. Vatreni’s last action was back in November in the Euro qualifiers, winning back-to-back games over minnows Latvia and Armenia to seal progression. Meanwhile, the 2022 World Cup bronze medalists were then rewarded with one of the toughest groups, facing Italy, Spain and Albania. Though Checkered Ones have reached the finals and semi-finals of the 2018 and 2022 edition of the world championships respectively, they have never advanced beyond the quarterfinals in the continent’s premier tournament.
