Everton will continue their preparations for the 2023-24 Premier League campaign with a pre-season friendly away to Bolton Wanderers at University of Bolton stadium on Tuesday. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of narrow victories at the weekend, with the hosts getting the better of Salford City 2-1, while the Toffeees edged past Wigan Athletic 1-0. Bolton had an impressive 2022-23 League One season, qualifying for the playoffs courtesy of securing fifth place finish, but lost out to Barnsley in the two-legged semi-final playoff tie. The visitors, meanwhile, managed to extend their English top flight status for at least one more season by claiming 17th-place finish in the Premier League standings last term.

Bolton recorded 26 wins, eight draws and 12 defeats in the league last season, finishing 15 points adrift third-placed Sheffield Wednesday. But the Trotters lost 2-1 on aggregate to Barnsley in the semi-final play-off in May. Meanwhile, Ivan Evatt’s men secured the Football League Trophy courtesy of thrashing Plymouth Argyle 4-0 on the final back in April. On their return to action for the pre-season this month, the Wanderers have been solid thus far, recording four wins and one draw in the process. The Whites came from behind to get the better of Salford last time out thanks to two late efforts from George Thomason and Aaron Morley.
Everton, on the other hand, had a disastrous campaign last term, as they were on the edge of being relegated from the Premier League for the first time since its creation in 1992. However, the Toffees managed to ensure survival courtesy of collecting 36 points from 38 games, just two points clear of the drop zone. The Blues’ final league-win against Bournemouth, thanks to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s lone goal in the second half, proved to be a decisive one. Meanwhile, Sean Dyche’s men returned for the pre-season on July 14, defeating Stade Nyonnais 2-1, before getting the better of Wigan, courtesy of new signing Ashely Young’s lone goal at DW Stadium, almost a week later. The Dogs of War have three more friendlies lined up against the likes of Bolton, Stoke City and Sporting Lisbon before beginning their 2023-24 Premier League season against Fulham on August 12.
