Phillippines cruised to their maiden victory in the Women’s World Cup as they pulled off a stunner against New Zealand Women in Wellington. The Filipino Women’s team scored 1 goal to register their maiden World Cup goal at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. The dominant performance of the New Zealand team proved to be futile against the Filipinos. Sarina Bolden scored the lone goal of the match in the 24th minute. Phillippines is the first debutant side at this tournament to record a victory. New Zealand’s loss to the Phillippines was just the third time in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup that a host nation has lost a group-stage game. The Philippines face Norway on Sunday. While New Zealand plays Switzerland, with all four teams in the group still able to qualify.
The Philippines lost 2-0 to Switzerland in their opening match and had been widely expected to struggle against the Football Ferns, who were coming off their first World Cup win, over the former champions Norway, and looking to book a spot in the last 16. Instead, the Philippines secured their own first World Cup win to keep alive their hopes of progressing in their debut tournament. New Zealand did not lack in effort but had seemingly lost the magic touch of their historic opener and missed a series of goalscoring opportunities.
New Zealand tried very hard to score throughout the game. Ferns had 16 shots out of which only 4 shots were on target. However, those were also saved by the Fillippino keeper Olivia McDaniel. In the possession game also, New Zealanders beat the Asians. However, the Asian side walked away with victory.
The highlight of the match will definitely be Sarina Bolden. Bolden made the ferns pay in the 24th minute. The forward got up well to fire a header directly at the New Zealand goalkeeper, Victoria Esson. Esson fumbled the ball into the net to give the Philippines their first World Cup goal.
Sarina is with the national team for a few years now. The 27-year-old forward has capped 37 times for the national team. Out of this, she has scored 22 goals till now. Bolden plays her club football for Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League. Interestingly, Sarina played her initial football for the United States. She even represented the U23 national team. However, later on, she switched her allegiance to Phillippines and even scored the historic goal.
