Dnipro-1 and Panathinaikos, both entering the second stage of Champions League qualifying, will face off in Kosice on Tuesday. The first leg of this tie, featuring two domestic league runners-up, will be played in Slovakia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Dnipro-1 finished second in the Ukrainian Premier League, qualifying for the Champions League alongside Shakhtar Donetsk. Due to the Russian invasion, they relocated near the Slovakian border. Last year, they competed in the Europa Conference League campaign in Kosice. The club faced financial challenges, leading to bankruptcy in 2018. Reborn as Dnipro-1, they were promoted to the top flight and performed well, finishing just five points behind Shakhtar. Now, they aim to reach the Champions League, starting against another domestic league runner-up.
Panathinaikos led the Greek Super League for much of 2022-23 but missed the title, finishing five points behind AEK. They secured a place in Champions League qualifying after Olympiakos’ troubles. Last summer, they were eliminated by Slavia Prague in the Conference League qualifiers. They won five of seven warm-up matches but lost 1-0 to Rayo Vallecano. Panathinaikos, the 1971 European Cup finalists, have struggled in recent continental competitions, last reaching the Champions League group stage in 2010. They face three more rounds to rejoin Europe’s elite this season.
