Newcastle United will play Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday night. The Magpies are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 win over Rangers on Tuesday , while Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Walsall last weekend. Both sides had impressive Premier League campaigns last time out, with Eddie Howe’s side claiming a fourth spot in the standings having collected 71 points from 38 games, while the Claret and Blue secured a seventh-place finish, with 61 points to their name.

Before flying to USA, Newcastle played two friendlies, losing 3-2 to local side Gateshead last week in their pre-season opener before defeating Rangers at Ibrox Stadium. The Magpies defeated Rangers in Glasgow on Tuesday courtesy of goals from Miguel Almiron and Harrison Ashby either side of Sam Lammers’ equaliser. Howe’s men will now tackle familiar foes from the Premier League in Philadelphia, before heading on to Atlanta next week. Newcastle have five more friendlies lined up against the likes of Aston Villa, Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, Fiorentina and Villarreal before their 2023-24 Premier League opener against Sunday’s opponents on August 12.

Aston Villa, on the other hand, secured their Europa Conference League qualification courtesy of defeating Brighton 2-1 on the final matchday last season. The victory helped the Lions to move to 61 points from 38 top flight games, just a solitary point ahead of eighth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. On their return to action for the pre-season on July 15, the Claret and Blue were held to a draw against the English fourth tier side Walsall FC, despite taking the lead through Ollie Watkins’ 43rd-minute effort. Between now and the kickoff on August 12, Villa are set to take on Fulham and Brentford while in the USA, before facing Lazio and Valencia early next month. Meanwhile the managed has strengthened Unai Emery’s squad, bringing in Youri Tielemans from Leicester City on a free transfer, while Spaniard Pau Torres has arrived for a reported GBP 33 million.
