Crystal Palace will round off their preparations for the new Premier League season when they host Lyon in a friendly at Selhurst Park on Saturday. Both sides are set to begin their new league seasons at the weekend, with the Eagles playing away to newly promoted Sheffield United in the English top flight, while Ligue 1 outfit will take on Strasbourg.

Crystal Palace have had a mixed pre-season so far, recording two wins, three defeats and one draw from six friendlies this summer. The Eagles started their preparations for the new campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Barnet before going on a three-game unbeaten run, winning two fixtures in the process. However, Roy Hodgson’s side couldn’t build on their victories against Crawley and Watford, losing consecutive matches against Millonarios and Sevilla in USA. Last time out, Palace came from behind to level the score against the Europa League champions Sevilla in Detroit but lost out in an highly unconventional penalty shootout. Instead of customary five spot kicks each, the shootout was played by sudden death rules from the start. The La Liga club’s captain Ivan Rakitic, who had scored the opening goal, stepped up and converted from the penalty spot, but Joachim Anderson crashed the English side’s opening effort against the crossbar. Meanwhile, the Eagles had managed to secure a respectable 11th-place finish in the English top flight last term and will be bidding to better that position this time around.
Lyon, on the other hand, missed out on European football for a second consecutive term, having finished seventh in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 standings. Les Gones returned for the pre-season mid-way through July and started off with a 2-1 victory over De Treffers, but then suffered three successive defeats against the likes of Manchester United, RWDM and Celta Vigo. However, a return to home comforts was the perfect tonic for L’OL, who welcomed Sion to their training ground for a behind-closed-doors encounter on Wednesday and secured a scintillating 8-2 triumph.
